MIFARE Plus Family

The MIFARE Plus® product family is designed to be both, a gateway for new Smart City applications as well as a compelling security upgrade for legacy infrastructures. It offers the benefit of a seamless upgrade of existing MIFARE Classic® product-based installations and services with minimum effort. This results into the possibility to issue cards, being fully backwards compatible to MIFARE Classic, into existing system environments prior to infrastructure security upgrades. After the security upgrade, the MIFARE Plus products use AES security for authentication, data integrity and encryption which is based on open, global standards.

As the next generation of NXP’s MIFARE Plus product family, the MIFARE Plus® EV2 IC is designed to be both a gateway for new Smart City applications and a compelling upgrade, in terms of security and connectivity, for existing deployments.  

The innovative Security Level (SL) concept, along with the special SL1SL3MixMode feature, allow Smart City services to move from the legacy Crypto1 encryption algorithm to next-level protection. Special features, such as the Transaction Timer or card-generated Transaction MAC, address the need for enhanced security and privacy in Smart City services. 

Operating MIFARE Plus EV2 in Security Layer 3 supports the use of NXP’s MIFARE 2GO cloud service, so Smart City services such as mobile transport ticketing and mobile access, can run on NFC-enabled smartphones and wearables.

The MIFARE Plus® SE contactless IC is the entry level version derived from the Common Criteria Certified MIFARE Plus product family. Being delivered at a comparable price range to the traditional MIFARE Classic with 1K memory, it provides all NXP customers with a seamless upgrade path to benchmark security within existing budgets.

MIFARE Plus SE product-based cards can easily be distributed into running MIFARE Classic product-based systems.

It is available in:

  • 1kB EEPROM only,
  • including the value block commands for MIFARE Classic on top of the MIFARE Plus S feature set and
  • an optional AES authenticate command in the “backward compatible mode” secures your investment against counterfeit products

MIFARE Classic Family

MIFARE Classic® is the pioneer in contactless smart ticket ICs operating in the 13.56 MHZ frequency range with read/write capability and ISO 14443 compliance.

It started the contactless revolution by paving the way for numerous applications in public transport, access management, employee cards and on campuses.

Following the broad acceptance of contactless ticketing solutions and extraordinary success of the MIFARE Classic product family, application requirements and security needs constantly increased. Therefore, we do not recommend to use MIFARE Classic in security relevant applications anymore. This led to the development of two high security product families MIFARE Plus and MIFARE DESFire and to the development of the limited use/high volume IC family MIFARE Ultralight.

MIFARE Classic EV1

MIFARE Classic EV1 represents the highest evolution of the MIFARE Classic product family and succeeds all previous versions. It is available in a 1K and in a 4K memory version, serving different application needs.

MIFARE Classic EV1 provides excellent ESD robustness for easy handling of the IC during the inlay- and card manufacturing and best in class RF performance for optimized transactions and allowing for more flexible antenna designs. Have a look at the features of MIFARE Classic EV1.

In terms of hardened feature set it includes:

  • Random ID support (7 Byte UID version)
  • NXP Originality Check support
  • Increased ESD robustness
  • Write endurance 200,000 cycles (instead of 100,000 cycles)
